Our Team
Carl Rogers, Co-Director : Carl is an Associate Professor with Tenure in the Department of Landscape Architecture at Iowa State University. He teaches interdisciplinary and core landscape architecture studios as well as technical courses on grading design, professional practice, and landscape representation. He is the co‐director of the Community Design Lab.
Professor Rogers has professional degrees and experience in both architecture and landscape architecture design and construction. He has supervised numerous projects that enhance neighborhood quality of life through the design of exterior spaces and exterior/interior spatial connections such as community gardens, streetscapes, and retail/streetscape relationships. He is a licensed landscape architect in Iowa with substantial practice experience in Des Moines, Iowa. He received his Master of Landscape Architecture degree in 1997 from the Rhode Island School of Design and his Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1993 from Kansas State University.
Chad Hunter, Design Fellow : Chad Hunter is a lecturer in the landscape architecture department and design fellow for the Community Design Lab (CDL) at Iowa State University. Through his work with the CDL, Hunter is involved with community engagement efforts throughout Iowa, developing place-based design strategies and catalyst projects related to topics such as livability, green infrastructure, complete streets, and food access. Hunter received his Bachelor of Art in visual art from the University of Northern Iowa and his Master of Landscape Architecture from Iowa State University.

Community Food Systems Program- Courtney Long, Program Coordinator : Courtney is a program coordinator with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in the departments of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Community and Economic Development. Courtney manages the development and implementation of the Agricultural Urbanism Toolkit, a three year community design process in partnership with communities in Iowa. This program partners directly with the Community Design Lab and additional departments on Iowa State Campus.
She is passionate about community engagement, public health, food access and holistic programming. The Agricultural Urbanism Toolkit process develops trust and community coalitions, facilitates public input sessions, conducts spatial assessment, and designs relevant food system projects. Courtney has been working with local food systems and design for access to healthy, local and regional foods since 2010 with various appointments and research.
